We enjoyed what we had then, and looked forward to things that were to come. We consumed information differently, and we bought things differently. It changed our world, changed our lives, and changed the world. We loved it. We were excited about it. That is, we loved it IF we werent a travel agent. Whats that, you ask? That was a title/role that was very popular, somewhat coveted, fun and rewarded, and utterly destroyed by the internet. Oh well, too bad for them. Just a casualty. Then, the Internet started infringing on other industries and jobs. What has the Internet done to the car sales, especially the used car sales, industry? What about the movie industry, the newspaper industry, the post office, the ________, the ______, the ______ the list can go on and on and on. Im going to say in general we didnt care about the changes in those industries when it happened. As consumers (of products, services, information) we were glad to see the changes, which enriched our lives. As long as the downsizing, industry slaughter and casualties didnt affect us directly, it was all for the good of society, and we could enjoy and be detached from the painful side of change. Fast forward to today. Im not saying the Internet is responsible for any economic downfall, but it caused change and shifting in what our normal used to be. And really, we voted for it. With each click, and purchase, we voted for the change. And now, were starting to realize what this change means to us, personally. Its the same thing with Wal-Mart. I like Wal-Mart. I shop there regularly. Its one of the first places I go to find something because theyll usually have it. Theres a Super Wal-Mart close to my house. But every time I spend money there there, it hurts any local store. (there arent many local stores around anymore most of them are just smaller, or more niche, versions of Wal-Mart) Its argued that buying at Wal-Mart hurts the U.S. economy, since most everything (gross exaggeration, I know) is manufactured outside of the U.S. but we dont think about that too much, when we drop $20 on something. How could our $20 help, or hurt, the U.S. economy? It cant, can it? Unless, of course, all those $20 bills add up to hundreds of millions, and billions then it can hurt. But my $20 cant hurt. Plus, it would take too much time and gas to go to two or three other stores just to find what I need. Wal-Mart is convenient! Whats convenient now might be a killer down the road. Speaking of killer. What about McDonalds? Just dropping by the drive-through cant hurt, can it? Its just one meal how can that have an impact on my body? Im hungry and need to feel my belly. I drive by a McDonalds every time I leave my tiny town. The last time I drove by I was with my kids and we were talking about nutrition. I wondered if anything on the MickeyDs menu had any nutritional value (or, any value that wasnt outweighed by the horrific ingredients). But its convenient, and cheap, to eat at McDonalds. Just this once. Not a big deal. It cant hurt that bad, can it? I was talking to a nutritionalist a few weeks ago. She said one of the most addictive and harmful things her clients eat is french fries. She said McDonalds rolls their fries in sugar, which makes them more addictive. And her clients are on them like crack addicts are on crack. Heres a google search with more info on rolling fries in sugar. Whats the point of all of this? Change is inevitable. No one can stop the Internet, even as it changes industries (ie travel), products (ie books), services (ie phone services). Instead of getting in the steamrollers path and then whining about being destroyed, how can you move, and then look for new opportunities? Also, small decisions that we make will have an impact on the future we live in, and create for our children. Attitudes, habits, ethics, our language, how and where we shop, will have more of an impact than we think. My message for the last six years has been a message of you CAN take control of your career, and your future. Todays post is more macro, bigger than your career you CAN take control of how you live, and what you get out of life. You can even start today. How to Succeed Interviewing With An Ignorant Interviewer - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career When interviewing, always assume that the person interviewing you doesnât know which questions to ask to ascertain whether youre the best candidate. My clients have relayed stories to me about getting thrown off track because they allowed their egos to get in the way when faced with an interviewer who didnt know about them, their qualifications and even the interview itself! Shockingly, many (or even most) times interviewers are not experts at interviewing. Your interviewer doesnât necessarily know how to screen candidates and they may ask you questions that disappoint and even offend the prepared candidate. When interviewed by an interviewer who is unprepared, the savvy candidate can use this scenario to their advantage by casually filling the void in information (without embarrassing the interviewer) by telling them what you can do for them and why youre a great fit for the job. You may feel like you are being repetitious, but continue to be calm and completely describe your qualifications and how they make you a great fit for the needs of the interviewer. Come armed to your interview with information that will help ease your interviewers task by knowing both the job description and what you can do better than anyone to fill this role. Know how you can add value and be successful at this particular role. Be relaxed when answering questions that seem âoff baseâ like, Whats your favorite color? or, Whats your favorite website? with an answer that reflects positivity and willingness to be flexible. Have 5-10 talking points that explicitly highlight what you know about the company, what appeals to you about the position and why youâre qualified to excel at the job. I had one candidate that failed an interview prior to our coaching session as he became so offended by a question that he refused to answer it! I suggested that if this occurs in a future interview, he should try controlling his knee jerk negative response to an odd question and use it instead to show his flexibility. Find something social to say that will indicate you could fit in with the corporate culture. Any answer is fine as long as its not hostile or weird. For instance, one possible answer to whats your favorite color could be blue as it reminds me of wide open skies that inspire me expand myself and reminds me of my love for the outdoors. Or my favorite website is.fill in the blank with one you know others at this firm would relate to. The best thing you can do in an interview that is not being handled professionally is treat the interviewer with respect and try to go with the flow. Adapt your style to his/her style in both how you modulate your voice, how quickly you speak and how you reveal your value. Let him know you are enthusiastic about the job and be clear on how you can add value in an area, which the firm is seeking support. Often you can learn about company issues prior to your interview by reading the management profile, checking the companys website and LinkedIn profile and from asking questions from recruiters or current employees. Try to tailor your message so it meets your prospective employers needs. Make a clear statement about how you can help him accomplish his goals. If you cant discern what their goals are before the interviewask during the interview and then be prepared to offer a good answer how you can meet their needs/objectives. Relax, breathe and be authentic! Dont stretch what you can do but do identify what youve done in the past that will prove you would be the best choice for the position youre seeking. Be prepared for interruptions and for questions that might not seem related to the job and try to respond with grace. For instance, if the interviewer gets an interruption from a phone interview, dont get flustered. Here are a few strategies to turn the situation around when faced with a bad interviewer: Ask Questions If you sense the interviewer is bored, turn the tables and try to get her to talk about herself. People usually enjoy talking about themselves. Ask something like, What do you like about the company? Refocus the Conversation Sometimes he/she will ask you questions that donât seem to make any sense. When faced with this kind of interviewer, answer the questions, but put yourself in the driverâs seat by steering the interview toward questions about the job itself. The person in front of you looks like someone who didnât even know that you were coming in for an interview. He has no clue as to who you are or what your background is. When faced with an interviewer who is unprepared, try leading the conversation by asking if you can tell them what you can do for them and why you are a great fit for the job. Ignore Interruptions, Be Patient Steer the Conversation to Where You want it to go Remember where you left off and when she is finished taking the call you can return to where you left off by saying something like, As I was saying or to answer your last question. The point is you must stay in control and calm no matter what happens so you craft your answers to include as much information thats pertinent about you that relates to why you could do the job best that they have outlined within the course of the appointment.
